How to Make Big Head Cutouts for Parties & Sports Games (DIY Guide)
5 min read
Big head cutouts are the giant, grinning faces you see waving in the stands at sports games, graduations and birthday parties. They look professional, but you can make one at home in under an hour — no design software needed.
Step 1: Cut out the face and hair with FaceConfetti
Open FaceConfetti and drop in a clear, front-facing photo. The AI runs entirely in your browser, so it's free and your photo never leaves your device. It keeps the face, hair and accessories like hats or headbands, and removes the background, neck and clothes.
- Border: push the border thickness up. A thick white outline makes the cutout easy to trim and pop from a distance.
- Neck Cutoff: lower it for a tight, chin-level "floating head", or raise it to keep a little neck for a more natural look.
- Download the transparent PNG when you're happy with it.
Step 2: Print it big
Use heavy cardstock (65–110 lb) so the print doesn't wrinkle when you glue it.
- Home printer: print at "fit to page" on Letter/A4 cardstock for a hand-held size, or use your printer's poster/tiling option to split a bigger head across 4 sheets and tape them together.
- Print shops: for a true stadium-size head (18–24 inches), order a poster print at Walgreens, FedEx Office or The UPS Store. Upload the PNG on a white background and ask for matte finish to avoid glare in photos.
Step 3: Cut it out and add a handle
- Trim along the white border with sharp scissors; use a craft knife for tight spots around hair.
- For a sturdy sign, glue the print to foam board first, then cut both together with a craft knife on a cutting mat.
- Hot-glue or tape a wooden paint stick or dowel to the back, about halfway up, as a handle.
That's it — you're ready to cheer, celebrate, or photobomb.
